Erwin Rommel's teacher at the Officer's Military School in Danzig stated that Rommel was a "serious young officer who never smoked, drank, or used drugs," although there was one possible instance later in 1940 in which it is suspected Rommel was under the influence of Pervitin (military-issue pills of methamphetamine used to stay awake for extended periods of time, which was particularly useful during the Invasion of France in 1940, in which troops had to stay awake inside tanks for days on end). It is said that while commanding tanks in the 7th Panzer Division, while under the influence of the drug, he ran over an entire column of French soldiers at the River Meuse.
