Contrary to popular belief, the 1st Geneva Convention was not signed in 1949. That was the 3rd Geneva Convention, which prohibited soldiers from assaulting non-combat medics wearing proper insignia. The first Geneva Convention was signed in 1853 and adopted in January 1854.
