Starting in 1933, the Nazis forbade American swing music and jazz, as well as anything else declared "un-German." Hans School, later the founding member of the Weiß Rose, even found himself in trouble when he played a Russian folk song on his guitar. There was also a peaceful resistance faction in the Hitler Youth known as the Swingjugend. Heinrich Himmler, taking note of the faction, wrote a confidential memorandum warning police of "young people who ignored German culture and preferred jazz music and swing dane." According to Himmler, the teenagers said "Swing Heil" instead of "Sieg Heil." He ordered the Gestapo to arrest the Swingjugend ringleaders and anyone who supported them, and send them to concentration camps.
