I don't know why, but I take great issue with people using online translators to speak a language they don't (or barely) understand. It especially gets annoying when I catch on to the mistake they make. For instance, a lot of people assume 'freund/freunde/freundin' means 'friend' due to the similar spelling, though this is not true. 'Freund' or 'freunde' refers to someone close to (usually in a personal relationship with) you, although this is not always the case and some differentiate by using a different prefix (for instance, 'ein freund' or 'a friend' and 'mein freund' or 'my boyfriend'). 99% of the time though this is the case. If you are referring to someone in a casual relationship, say an acquintance, you would say 'bekannt/bekannte/bekannter'. And regarding someone you barely know at all, you would generally say 'kumpel'.
