In 1917, during the Battle of Caporetto in the Kingdom of Italy (present-day Slovenia), Erwin Rommel took advantage of the rough terrain against the Italian forces. For his service, he was awarded the Military class of the Pour le Mérite (the highest Prussian medal during World War I).
