During the First World War, 1914 and anytime prior, all Imperial German Picklehaube were made of leather. Due to dwindling leather supplies, the Central Powers had to import leather from Latin American countries, in particular Argentina. They later switched to ersatz Pickelhauben made out of thin sheet steel, pressurised felt, and even paper. From 1916 onwards, the Pickelhaube was replaced by the Stahlhelm which costed less to produce, was made of more-accessible materiel for the Germans that didn't have to be imported from other countries, and offered greater protection from shrapnel.
