Outside of the camps and facilities, they established the General Government, an administrative office governing the country. By doing so, 35 million men and women were now subject to persecution. In an attempt to ethnically cleanse the land, they began deporting Natives, and, in their place, came "clean" families. The evicted families were permitted to take only a cartful ofbelongings. One day, a certain Melita Maschmann asked one of the officers where the evicted families went. He told her that they were sent to farms or resettled in the southeastern part of the country, but, in actuality, they weren't. Far from it. Many "resettled" people—especially priests, teachers, and other leaders—were being lined in the woods and shot.
