In 1944 the 326. was stationed at the Pas-de-Calais in Normandy, France under the command of Oberst Herr Erwin Kaschner, and moved across the Seine River to assist remnants of the 2. Panzerdivision, but was encircled and destroyed in the Falaise pocket. In 4 September 1944 the division was reformed as the 326. Volksgrenadier-Division and later the 579. Volksgrenadier-Division and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. In April 1945 after the Battle of Berlin the division was captured in the Ruhrkessel.
