Description: Daily Ledger No. 62 - Written by J.P. Protesters Murdered for Just Trying to Help Due to numerous cases of police brutality directed to people of colour, many individuals have taken to the streets to protest and honor those who fought for the right cause. While some have taken to arms and attempted to revolt, the majority have chosen to peacefully protest. Regardless of who it is, local law enforcement has repeatedly used excessive force to shut down any BLM protests and silence the activists. Tear gas, for instance, is a deadly gas that contains chemicals that can cause severe damage (sometimes even blindness) to the naked eye, alongside permanent lung damage. The Third Geneva Convention of 1949 outlawed the use and distribution of it during warfare, however the United States, among other countries still use it to disperse protesters. If that wasn't deadly enough, there have been numerous cases of physical violence ranging from attempted lynching to driving a car through a group of protesters and even murder. Mind you, these are little more than people like you and me trying to make a change; going out of their way to improve the quality of lives for people they don't even know. And law enforcement, parliament members, and counter-revolutionaries are responding by murdering them. What Needs to Happen It can be agreed on by people from all backgrounds that America is falling apart. This country will not last longer if we do nothing. Our government is broken, our legal system is broken, our entire state is broken. As I am not trying to involve myself in leftist, centrist, and rightist politics right now and just for what is morally true, we shall not converse as to what party, if any, our country should be, but rather what needs to occur. Firstly, it is the parliament's duty to set in place fair laws and punish those found in contempt of said laws. As the government is the only authority figure in our state that can punish law enforcement, they should assess their duty to punish them. Right? That is what a fair government would do, isn't it? Well, that isn't occurring, or at the very least, it isn't good enough. Many officers found murdering protestors were only removed from their position (which still enables them) or charged with homicide. It isn't homicide. It's first degree murder. They were seen committing a crime. They pre-meditated it. They should be put in prison for, at minimum, several consecutive lifetimes. Some more extremist people might say, "well, they took a life; they should be treated the same and have their life taken as well," and I once thought the same way. But being put in prison is undoubtedly a far greater punishment as they would have to live in horrendous conditions, and being haunted by their actions; as they should. If you just killed them, they wouldn't have to endure any of that. Next, the police force should be dis-banded if those within their ranks are not going to abide by the law. Finally, even if an authoritarian figure is not abiding by the legal system, they should still be removed from their position if the majority of the community believes they are irresponsible. To conclude this noticably short article, for just wanting to make a change out of the goodness of their heart, innocent people are being slaughtered, those committing the atrocities are not being punished, and we need to configure our justice system before it ends up destroying our country.
