On 19 November 1941, an unusual ceremony took place at St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague, the former capital of Czechoslovakia before Nazi capitulation in March 1939. Himmler's 2nd-in-Command and Governor of Bohemia and Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich is presented with seven keys to a golden door by State President, Emil Hácha. Beyond that door lied the treasure chamber, in it being the Crown of St. Wenceslas, which symbolised Czech independence. By entrusting the most precious symbol of nationhood to Heydrich, Hácha was displaying Czech subservience to Nazi Germany. Although no evidence exists, it is believed that in the privacy of the jewel room, Heydrich placed the Crown atop his own head; defying an ancient Czech legend that said whoever did so unjustly would die within a year. Less than a year later, on 4 June 1942, Heydrich, in a Mercedez-Benz Typ 320, was assassinated by the Czechoslovak Resistance, which had been trained by the SOE.
