Empathy, or perhaps extending to relationships in my eyes, are a bit of a facade created by the brain. Values that ultimately connect to self-interest and desires. Maybe despite this, it doesn't invalidate what was there, but it does make the scenario of change such a determining factor for what you end up choosing to empathize with more.
