He confronted them in hotlands, with their new powers but died, as his last action he formed a barrier... A barrier the protected the judgement hall, only to be broken when every monster was killed. However... the last monster... was papyrus... In Sans' last attempt to save him, he locked Papyrus in his room, where he witnessed Sans' death. He eventually broke out of the room and got into judgement hall before flowey created his barrier. After the barrier was created, Papyrus was the last monster in the underground... or so he thought. The human ended up turning back, killing grillby, just to get in... Papyrus, while this occurs booby-traps the whole hall. Papyrus was ready. Ready for whatever was to come.
