He DID treated it as a RP. He sent most of the messages in the RP Channel. Plus you don't have to be in the RP Channel to RP. If he was GENUINELY trying to help, he would have got an actual therapist, or SOMEONE who could reach out to him. He wouldn't have felt inclined to give himself the position of therapist and try to "defuse" the situation by RPing.
