for 17 x 5 i would mentally do 10 x 5 and 7 x 5, then add them together, so first 10 x 5 = 50, then 7 x 5 is just 3 x 5 + 3 x 5 + 5, which makes 15 + 15 + 5, which is 35, and 50 + 35 = 85
