The reason why his name is "Mortem" is because he rules over a "second" afterlife. This afterlife that Mortem controls has taken a form of a kingdom with a village nearby. This kingdom's subjects are souls that were born in the world and souls that died in the normal world, people who come to this kingdom that were good people have a choice of being brought to heaven, being reincarnated, or staying within the world and live their lives there. For the bad people with distorted souls, they will be "executed". An execution of a soul would purify it and reincarnate into a new person with the ability to continue making the soul pure, but it is possible that this person can rot this soul once again. Mortem's world has a certain tradition of everybody wearing masks, because of this, almost everyone doesn't know Mortem's real face. There are times where Mortem specifically goes after one person that will soon meet their demise, specifically bad people. A bit of story between Mortem; Mortem is the brother of Krasnaya Noch', until one day they were separated. Mortem and Noch' have no remaining memories of each other. When Noch' disappeared, the last thing Mortem did was tore out the flower within his eye out of despair, that became the main reason why Mortem now has no memories of Noch'. Mortem's flower is basically his heart, the flower replaces one of Mortem's eyes, and if torn out, Mortem would "rest". When Mortem "dies", he is brought back after a long while, not remembering anything of how he died. Negative emotions also affect his flower, when he is feeling some sort of negative emotion, the flower starts wilting away, this is also because of when Noch' and Mortem was separated. The flower in Mortem's eye can also grow on dead bodies in the real world, but they only grow on bodies of people who have entered Mortem's world. These flowers are called "The Blue Deaths" and can be used to start a ritual that can allow you to enter Mortem's world without dying.
