“In May 1939, the SS St. Louis carried 930 Jewish refugees as it sailed from Hamburg, Germany, bound for Cuba [and the United States]. Cuba accepted twenty-eight refugees and denied entry to the rest. The United States also denied entry to the refugees. Thus, the ship was forced to return to Europe, where several European countries were cajoled into accepting the passengers.
