Present in only Middle English and Catholic Christianity, demons are entities that once served a divine individual known as God. They are said to have betrayed him, being cast to the "Pits of Hell". However, in most mythologies, demons are simply beings in which typically act in corrupt ways in a refuge for power, or bring fortune.
