Hitler almost, but didn't succeed in acquiring a popular vote. Still, with 196 seats won in the Reichstag (keep in note that 293 seats are required for a majority) and 33% of the popular vote, he demanded that von Hindenburg made him Chancellor. Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg, in his 80s and wanting to avoid a civil war, caved in and made Hitler the Chancellor on 30 January 1933.
