The MG42 ("Maschinengewehr 42", literally "Machine Gun 42") was a 7.92x57mm Mauser magazine-based general-purpose machine gun used widely by the German Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS during World War II. Production of the MG42 began in 1942, and it was intended to replace the outdated MG34 (Maschinengewehr 34), which was designed in 1934. It fires at a rate of 1,200-1,500 rounds per minute (depending on the bolt), can be mounted with both a bipod and tripod, is relatively lightweight and easy to carry, and automatically cools the barrel down with water. If the barrel was to overheat, it could be replaced with another barrel, a process which on average took 7 seconds. The MG42 made a distinct sound similar to that of ripping cloth, and thus was nicknamed "Hitler`s Zipper."
