Ok so portals are from his home dimension which is just an empty black void, they can be manipulated to work as a screen by him but are usually just portals for interdimensional travel, he already did find the cure I'm pretty sure u remember the comic, the thing is he isn't even trying to cure specifically he's just a scientist and its a new subject for him him being isolated for a long period of time means he just kind of pretends to act normal
