Mega Evolution does primarily work via the connections between the trainer and Pokemon, and to also add, the Pokemon doesn't remain in it's Mega Evolution for long, while it may be problematic, it's not exactly what you would call "torture". It can be painful, but if the Trainer is caring, the Pokemon doesn't suffer too much
