Instead of getting darker as they traversed, the glow from the crystals would continue to light up the cave, occasionally they'd pass a torch in areas that didn't seem to be lighten up well enough via the crystals. As they continued, they could see places where people were mining at via the pickaxes that were left around. Whilst they explored, they'd eventually come across a large a large cliff with a bridge over it they could cross.*
