The Teutonic Knights (an Order of Brothers of the German House of St. Mary in Jerusalem) were a German Catholic military order formed around 1190 in the Holy Land. Originally founded as a charitable hospital order, they became a fearsome medieval crusading force, best known for crusading in the Baltic region, converting pagan populations, and establishing a powerful, independent monastic state in Prussia. Established during the Third Crusade in Acre (modern-day Israel) to care for wounded soldiers and pilgrims. They were soldier-monks who took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They operated similar to the Knights Templar but were predominantly composed of German-speaking nobility. Facing difficulties in the Holy Land, they shifted focus to Eastern Europe in the 13th century, where they led the "Northern Crusades" to forcibly convert Baltic tribes to Christianity.
