"I hold a torch in my right hand, and a vase in my left. The torch to burn heaven and the vase to douse hell. So that man may worship God not out of fear of punishment, or desire for reward, but out of Love." God instilled a base animalistic system within our brains, the same one that makes it difficult to stray from selfishness, lust, sloth, and so on. This system can be exploited, at a base level, to create the foundations of faith. You fear hell, so you believe. You want heaven, so you believe. And God accepts this, but the most pure hearted of believers, the ones God loves the most, are the ones that can move past this primal drive and focus on God purely out of appreciation for what he has given us.
