Things like smoking and drinking and other public addictions are more difficult to maintain. People try to hide it, try to be secretive, but it ends up being public anyways. And boy, peer pressure is a wonderous hack. It can get you to do things you would never ever do in your right mind, or get out of things that you are completely devoted to otherwise. You stick a man into a room with a couple other men who all seem to believe that the word cherry is spelled with an i instead of an e, and he'll genuinely start to doubt himself even though he's read the word hundreds of thousands of times before. Case in point, public actions get public shunning, and are easier to let go of.
