In my personal opinion, if surplus value is still going to be extracted, the workers should have some level of say in what that surplus value is spent on. One way this could work is the state could directly own firms, and the workers could elect officials who decide on what to spend that surplus value on (whether it be transport, museums, national defence, et cetera).
