while answers arent simple, my opinion is that religion can have its values twisted in ways where religion is tied to the values of how you should live AND how others should live. Some people aren't taught that people have a right to choose and they believe they know whats best because of their belief in their importance in the cog that is salvation. And then there are some people who simply use religion to manipulate people because its an easy way to get desperate and lost people to find anything to believe in.
