there could be a species of aliens that are composed of a mix of specific simple amino acids that propogate through an ocean via simple chemical reactions and thats it, yet when we step back and take a look at the bigger picture, they behave more like a slime mold than randomly spreading particles because of some weird, super complex system of molecular interactions we couldn't even begin to fathom.
