same tonal communication. its super cool how modern day phone dial pads keep the redundant dual-tone sounds, they serve no purpose besides functioning as a tribute to the first ever phone systems. try pressing the three numbers in a row (like 1 2 3) or the three numbers in a column (like 1 4 7) and listen to how one tone remains the same while another rises or falls. old phones basically used one tone for the x coordinate and one tone for the y coordinate, and by sending those two tones over, the operator computer says "first row tone, second column tone, ah, the numbers two!"
