you might be talking about integrals. say we have the equation y = x it's just a 45 degree line, we want to find the area under y = x from x = 2 to x = 5, we can take the antiderivative of y = x to get x^2/2, then we plug in 5 to get 25/2, and 2 to get 4/2, which is 2. then you subtract the 2 input from the 5 input, (25/2) - 2, and that's your area.
