because computers used the same audio channel as voice calls, you could actually hack them by producing the right tones into your microphone at the right time. a whistle that was released as a toy in a captain crunch cereal box back when telephone booths used dial up tone communication for data exchange allowed for you to bypass the payment needed to make a call simply by blowing the whistle into the receiver of the phone, which produced the exact "customer has paid" tone that the computers used.
