i think it's because that the religion in specific has a ton of lines you can just rip out of context. like with the "wives must submit to their husbands" line in the bible, the sentence right after follows that with something along the lines of "and husbands must also respect their wives for they are equals". that's probably not a reason why many religious people are horrible (in this case, Christians), but it is one of the things they do, i guess.
