Description: The 2013 El Reno tornado, occurring on May 31, 2013, in Central Oklahoma, is recognized as the widest tornado ever officially recorded, peaking at a massive 2.6 miles in diameter. This EF3 tornado (initially rated EF5 based on radar-measured winds of 302 mph but later downgraded due to lack of extreme ground damage) struck during an active outbreak that caused widespread chaos in the Oklahoma City metro area. The tornado was exceptionally dangerous due to its rapid, unpredictable shifts in speed and direction, moving at times over 50 mph and even looping back over its own path. It was a rain-wrapped, multiple-vortex event, meaning smaller, intense subvortices rotated within the much larger, broader wind field, which caused extreme damage in rural areas. The event is historically significant for being the first to result in the death of storm chasers, with eight people killed, including renowned researcher Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras, and colleague Carl Young of the TWISTEX team, who were caught by the rapidly expanding, unexpectedly shifting funnel. The tornado, which was on the ground for about 40 minutes, caused significant agricultural damage and, along with associated flash flooding from the parent supercell, created a chaotic and dangerous situation that prompted many people to flee, causing massive traffic jams on Interstate 40.
