The hardest known material is pure diamond, the reason diamonds can still shatter is because their crystal structures are almost allways very faulty, if a diamonds entire structure was perfectly cubic, basically nothing would be able to break it. The second hardest material is cubic boron nitride. Both diamond and cBN are used in manufacturing for extremely tough drill bits and so on.
