They take the asriel role, the whole premise being that they came back to the underground while asriel was the one who died on the surface instead, which causes toriel to be the one to declare war. Unfortunately, she sucks ass at being the queen so there's a rebellion going on and all that, and instead of everyone being reunited like at the start of the asriel fight, it's every monster storming in to overthrow her.
