64136b Originally, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre began after the First Crusade in 1099, when Godfrey de Bouillon, ruler of Jerusalem, established a noble guard of knights to protect the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its community, evolving from the Milites Sancti Sepulcri (Knights of the Holy Sepulchre) who guarded the holy sites and pilgrims. These knights were dedicated to defending the sacred sites and ensuring safe passage for pilgrims, forming the basis of the modern Catholic chivalric order focused on supporting Christians in the Holy Land. After the Crusaders captured Jerusalem, Godfrey de Bouillon appointed knights to guard the tomb of Christ and the holy sites, calling himself "Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre". The original group included armed knights (Sergentes) and canons, forming the Milites Sancti Sepulcri, who swore to defend the Sepulchre and follow an Augustinian rule. Pope Paschal II officially recognized the Order's existence and purpose in 1113.

64136b The Knights Hospitaller (officially the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta) were a prominent medieval Catholic military order formed around 1099 to provide medical care to pilgrims in the Holy Land. They evolved into a powerful, armored fighting force, protecting Crusader states before ruling Rhodes (1310โ1522) and Malta (1530โ1798). Founded by Blessed Gerard in Jerusalem in the 11th century to run a hospital for pilgrims, receiving Papal recognition in 1113. Originally charitable, the Order became a military force due to the Crusades, with members taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They were a major military power in the Levant, operating 25+ castles including the famous Krak des Chevaliers. After leaving the Holy Land, they became a naval power, protecting the Mediterranean from Ottoman expansion.

64136b They were one of the first institutions to combine pilgrim care with military protection, similar to later orders like the Templars, though their focus was specifically on the pilgrimage routes. In essence, the Knights of the Tau were devout warrior-monks dedicated to serving God by aiding His travelers, long before the concept of formal military orders became widespread.
8cf262 hii, I don't think we've been able to formaly meet yet
64136b The Knights of the Tau, or the Order of Saint James of Altopascio, were an early Italian military-hospitaller order founded in Tuscany around the late 11th century to protect pilgrims on the Via Francigena, combining spiritual care with military defense and hospital services, identifiable by their Tau cross symbol and known for their early integration of military and charitable roles, preceding the Templars in some aspects. Established by Matilda of Canossa (1070-1080) at Altopascio, near Lucca, Italy. Their mission was to guard and assist pilgrims traveling to Rome, providing hospices and medical aid, and defending them from bandits. The Tau cross (T), representing Christ's cross, symbolizing penance and salvation, hence their nickname, "Knights of the Tau" (Cavalieri del Tau). They functioned as a military order but also ran hospitals, making them pioneers in integrating spiritual, charitable, and martial duties.
